I fell in love with jewelry when I was young, rummaging through my grandmother’s bureau drawers, enchanted by her treasure trove of costume jewelry that she kept in a jumble of tiny boxes, each with its own story. Since my childhood in the woods and on the beaches of Connecticut, I have accumulated and “curated” my collections of objects, found and acquired, assembling them in patterns and groupings that often inspire my jewelry designs. I think of these pebbles, shells, rusted metal fragments and art objects as an archive of my travels and memories.
While working on the Navajo Reservation during college, I was captured by the wide open western landscapes and their feeling of expansive freedom. It was there that I met Navajo silversmiths who inspired me to learn to make my own jewelry. I headed to Colorado, where I earned my BFA at the University of Colorado. After making jewelry in Boulder for a number of years I eventually relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska, where I now live. I have an airy, sun-filled studio where I work with three bench assistants and my husband, Craig Roper, who manages the business end of our operations.
Nature is my limitless source for design inspiration. I lean toward natural, organic shapes and lines, translating them into elegant, sculptural jewelry.
Jewelry as Art
I love the magic that happens when people connect with a piece of my jewelry. It’s a response coming from an eye for the unique and the confidence to express yourself creatively through wearable art.
Made to Wear
Comfort and wearability are important to me. My work can be worn with a T-shirt and jeans and transition to a dressy night on the town. We “test drive” every new design in the studio to check for comfort and functionality.
In business since 1983, Sydney Lynch Jewelry makes each piece by hand in our Lincoln, Nebraska, studio. While my name is on each piece, the business is truly a team effort. Working with my small, talented crew of metalsmiths, I create the designs, and we all work to produce the collection.
